How to Make Your Foldable E-bike Disc Brakes More Durable?

As countrries' safety requirements for small electric mobility tools become more and more stringent, some mid-to-high-end small mobility products are often equipped with disc brake systems to achieve better braking effects. So how much do you know about foldable electric bicycle disc brakes? Today, VICCI will tell you.

Ⅰ. Some tips of foldable electric bicycle disc brakes

They consist of a brake disc attached to the wheel and a caliper located on the edge of the disc. The braking principle is to use external force to push the brake pad to clamp the brake disc to produce braking effect.

1. Disc brakes can be divided into two types according to the way they control the rotation of the disc: hydraulic disc brakes and wire-pull disc brakes. Hydraulic disc brakes use brake fluid as the transmission material. The piston inside the cylinder compresses the fluid by the force acting on the brake lever. The pressure is transmitted from the oil pipe to the caliper, and the caliper pushes the piston inside the caliper, which drives the brake disc to support the brake disc.

2. The advantage of the hydraulic disc brake is that it can minimize the power loss during the transmission process, which means it can achieve a great braking effect with very easy force.

3. Wire-pull disc brakes use the pulling force of the brake wire to make the brake pads in the caliper (the brake pads) and the brake pads rub against the brake disc to produce a braking effect. This is very similar to the V-brakes used on foldable electric bicycle. They both use brake cables for braking. However, compared to hydraulic types, cable-pulled disc brakes lose braking force due to the length of the wire itself, elasticity, and friction from the sleeve which will result in insufficient braking. The structure of the cable-pulled disc brake is relatively simple. By replacing the brake cable and maintaining the lubricity in the brake cable tube, the problem of brake weakening during operation can be solved and the maintenance is easier.

Most power-assisted bicycles and e-scooters use wire-pull disc brakes. That's mainly because disc brakes perform better, are easier to maintain, cost-effective and suitable for most models. Among several common brakes, disc brakes also rank among the top performers.

Ⅱ. The daily maintenance of foldable electric bicycles

1. Develope good riding habits

Many users like to brake suddenly and this habit is not good for the user's own safety and the braking system. The effect of disc brakes is good and it is easy to lock the tires. In this case, the user is likely to lose balance and fall. For brake pads, frequent hard braking can cause excessive wear. When emergency braking is really needed, brake pad failure is very dangerous. Therefore, develop good habits when using the brakes. Don't ride too fast, reduce the number of hard brakes and brake as slowly as possible.

2. Regularly check and replace brake lines and brake pads

Brake cables lose elasticity or wear over time, so brake pads (also known as brake pads) are one of the parts that are prone to wear. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly check the wear of these two parts of the foldable electric bicycle. Generally speaking, the brake pads can be used normally for about 6 months to 1 year in daily use and the damaged brake lines must be replaced.

3. Maintenance of the disc

Wire-pull disc brakes are actuated by a single-sided disc. Once the disc is deformed, the braking system will fail. Therefore, in the daily maintenance of the electric scooter, it is necessary to check whether there is any foreign matter attached to the disc that causes deformation during operation. When using the disc, try to prevent the disc from being deformed by external forces.
